Farmer's Market
6-4-2005

Lots of stuff today! :). I decided to start taking pictures with some coins in there, to give a sense of scale. It's US funds: a quarter, a dime, a nickle and a penny.
(click pictures to enlarge & 'Back' to return)

$40 of Mountain Apples:
These are some of the best mountain apples I've seen - without picking them directly myself. They bruise easily, get 'stung' by the fruit flies, and/or get eaten by birds, rats, and whatnot - so it's hard to find them at market. I just had to get a whole box of them. It's one of the very few fruits my son will eat & I just love 'em too!

$9 of Cherry Tomatoes and Mountain Apples
I got some of these mountain apples before I found the others.. they were 3/$1 and smaller, less quality than the others. The cherry tomatoes were primo here: $3/bag.

$140 of Primo Smooth Lychee
This is the last from this tree, and it's close to the end of the season for this variety of lychee too. There are others coming though - but this one's the best, so I got extra. They keep in the fridge (if I had room) and do okay for quite some time without the fridge since she picks out all the ones that might not keep as well (stung, broken skin, etc.) for me. :)

$6 Romaine:
This romaine isn't as large as it had been from these farmers, but then it's also becoming the season that's difficult to grow them. These are medium to small sized ones at $1.50 each.

$10 of pineapple:
These are Sugarloaf pineapples - supposedly low-acid. They have white flesh and were $5 each from an organic farmer. My hubby really loves pineapple, so I got them mainly for him. :) I love 'em too, but not as much as he does, so they're his.

$3 of Surinam & Acerola Cherries
I got what they had of these yummies. They're best and most fun to pick directly, but I'll take what I can get. The smooth ones are the acerola ones.

$21 of White Sapote & Limes:
This is a discount on the white sapote. They are better quality than I got from her last week & better priced. The limes were 3/$1.

$10 of Kale:
There was such a variety of kale available today, that I decided to get some of each. I might do a taste test w/my family. :) From left to right are: curly kale, red kale, dino kale (above & below) and reg. flat kale. The lower dino kale was part of the food delivery I got yesterday actually, but I wanted to put it in the picture to show two different looks to dino kale.

$1 of Fish Discards for Dog & Cat
I got some fresh raw food for my cat & dog like usual today, since it's Saturday. I put it in a pot now (heh, got to use 'em for something now that I'm not cooking, right?). It's cool. I go to the fish market after the farmer's market & catch them before they dump their trash. The manager dude is usually there and has gloves on for cutting stuff up already. He pulls stuff out of their trashcan for me and puts it in the pot as I hold it and help pick out which ones to get. I then leave a $1 tip for them and go home. When I get there I take the cat dish and put some of the smaller parts in there with a meat fork or stick or something. I give the bulk of it to the dog, as she's bigger, eats more & faster... The dog likes to pull out the fish from the pot & lay them out on the grass or dirt before eating them. She will lick the pot down before I take it in to wash. The only time I touch anything fishy is when I'm washing out the pot.. and that's usually pretty clean already from the dog. :)

Today they had salmon in the trash too, which probably wasn't as fresh... I got it for variety & thought the cat would like it better. She didn't seem as interested today in any of it for some reason. Perhaps she already pigged out at someone else's house, heh, she does that. Here are a couple of pics of my dog eating and/or licking the fish after pulling it out on the ground.. pic. 1 and pic. 2

I forgot to take pics. of the other stuff I've been getting. Out of practice and all... On Mondays we're getting $20 of coconuts delivered to us at our store, which is 20 or so coconuts, depending on their quality. I joined a new CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) thing for an organic farm I know and one of them is delivering it to me on Tuesdays for now. She's moving next month, so I'll have to pick it up on my way home on Tuesdays after that. The content varies, but this week it had tomatoes, lettuce, bananas and papaya I believe. I still have my regular $10 of cocos (10 or so of them), $20 of cooking bananas on Wednesdays that I pick up at the farmer's market too. This Wednesday we also got apple bananas (for my hubby 'cause he's doing all raw now too & I'm not into apple bananas right now), lots of oranges, some limes, and $100 of that great lychee again. We might have gotten other stuff, but I can't remember now. On Friday our regualar delivery resumed as they had the salad mix going again. They told me on Wed. at market, so I also ordered 2 dino kales too. It was 2 pounds of lettuce mix for $12 +2 bunches kale for $2, so it came to $14. Also on Friday a friend of ours paid for his bill at the store with the biggest coconuts I've ever seen! I'm going to open them tomorrow w/my hubby and measure just how much coco water is in them. I'll come back & report how much water was in them on that page about them.
