Janie's November 2006 Journal

I have things to tell you about my Olivia cruise, my 42nd birthday (spent on the ship), Thanksgiving and more. I'll post them later, once I have the rest of this old site up.

Thursday 11/23/06 (Thanksgiving):

I'm entering this much, much later... in 2009, actually, so I'm not sure if I got the date correct... but here 'goes anyway. :) I've included some pictures. As usual, you can click 'em to view 'em larger. :)

I went to a "raw" potluck at a friend's house who does Hippocrates Institute sort of raw, so it's more of the living foods kinda' raw, thus the quotes... She does it for a living and her students/clients were the main attendees... They're like our extended ohana (Hawaiian for family) here on-island, so it was good to see everyone and all. Sometimes I'm in the mood to try out all that stuff just for the day anyway, so it's fun in that way too. It's really involved to make that sort of stuff and it's fairly tasty, however I tend to like the simplier stuff I do better after all. Nice to know.

I decided to do a turkey garnish for the top of the pie molded out of dates, with banana eyes and tail feathers.

I also had some organic crab-apples from the health-food store and carved the apple turkies I've made several years now out of them. They were small enough to just put on top.

I had thought about doing a tray of them, but I was running late, as usual and just did three instead. We usually bring way more stuff than everyone else anyway...

The pie was simply banana creme (thick banana smoothie) and the main crust was dates. That would have made a nice banana creme pie in itself.

But I did a crumble crust for the top with dates and pecans chopped in a food processor in order to put the other decorations on top. I had planned to do the eggfruit-banana creme pie that's a lot like pumpkin pie that I had done in previous years, but without the top so it was all fruit... but, alas, the eggfruits weren't ripe enough at that time...

ANYway... I put the whole thing in a glass display that we had salvaged from a thrift store or somebody's discards (can't remember now).

It worked well and was a big hit - the pie was gone in no time and people were asking me for the recipe. It was simple, I told them - just bananas, dates and pecans... blend the bananas with water to make a creme, put dates in food processor with S blade and then smash into crust shape on glass pie plate, using fork to make edge marks, pour creme in, put dates and pecans in food processor to crumble and sprinkle on top. Tah Dah! LOL

The other recipes were very long and involved, even simply for their ingredients.. many of them taking several days to do all the parts and such. Like this un-turkey. I don't remember how to make the pate, but it took more than a day and lots of stuff and dehydrating, then she hand shaped it into a bird sort of shape on some wax paper. It was admirable how much labor and resources she put into it all. She was the host, so she was also displaying what she could do and all, so also made some sort of gravy thing, a cranberry something, some stuffing and I don't remember what else. I enjoyed it for the day, especially since I didn't have to make it or clean up afterwards, but I think I prefer the simpler foods for many reasons, not to mention digestability and all... and, heh, the fact that I guess I'm lazier than that. ;)

Here's a picture I got of most of the potluck stuff with my pie on one of the (three?) tables.

Sorry a lot of the pictures are all greyed out and all... I took 'em on my cell phone at the time, which doesn't capture color very well, but I didn't realize it yet... guess that's why I didn't post this before...

K, so that's it for now on this one. Aloha! :)
